Help to make a differencePeter Hawley of cue sport distributor United Pool has issued a challenge to all sports, outdoor and angling equipment distributors, sports people and anglers to make a difference by helping him to clear the Wilge River outside the Free State town of Vredefort and Frankfort.
![]() Hawley says this is not merely a problem affecting the local communities who rely on the river for their supply of fresh water, but also impacts on the water supply to Gauteng, as the river is a feeder for water to the region from the Katse Dam in Lesotho, the Vaal River Basin and Vaal Dam. The blocked Wilge River is arguably the most important source of water for households and businesses in Gauteng, says Hawley, who was inspired to take action (in the form of mechanically clearing the obstructions) following a visit to the area. He is now raising awareness among people willing to commit to the project, as well as raise funds.
