Hawley says this is not merely a problem affecting the local communities who rely on the river for their supply of fresh water, but also impacts on the water supply to Gauteng, as the river is a feeder for water to the region from the Katse Dam in Lesotho, the Vaal River Basin and Vaal Dam. The blocked Wilge River is arguably the most important source of water for households and businesses in Gauteng, says Hawley, who was inspired to take action (in the form of mechanically clearing the obstructions) following a visit to the area.
